High westerly winds from the water blow against the bluff concentrating forces at the top. The house mediates this force by creating a wind break. Stretching along the bluff are the living areas, the entry porch and the garage. This north/south oriented wing is highly glazed to take advantage of the long range views over the bluff to the islands.

Departure Design: one-bedroom 1,400sf home with an open studio for music, painting, and videography… Big sustainable notions are exercised here: increased density of two detached homes sharing a single standard city lot; the potential of greater density still with a future ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit); the small, compact footprint; and a simple, un-fussy design. Sustainability is also addressed with extremely durable low-maintenance, and long lifecycle materials. Sustainable materials and fixtures include the salvaged siding and wood floor, high-efficiency plumbing and lighting fixtures, on-demand gas water heater, and hydronic radiant floor heat.

Reza Aliabadi: The Shaft House is an unexpected and exciting spatial experience that survives the limits of our ordinary living spaces. The two and a half storey detached house reevaluates functional arrangements within a narrow building while creating bright and airy spaces. Affordability is a value that the building successfully owns by integrating well thought low-cost strategies in the design process; from purchasing a modest lot of about 20 feet wide to choosing sustainable and cost efficient materials. Aluminum siding, untreated wood and recyclable rusted steel for the exterior of the house not only help reduce the costs of the design but t also tried to make a statement on organic behaviors of buildings by changing color while aging along with the house.
