“Using tough economic times and materialism as a backdrop, the architect set out to challenge the notion that “bigger is always better.” The result is this sustainable and portable dwelling that has become a launching point and education tool to transform the way homes are designed. Concise and intriguing, the 360 square foot structure originally designed as a 3D teaching moment that became an exemplary centerpiece at a regional renewable energy fair. A modular design, the structure’s mechanical areas – kitchen and bathroom – are prefabricated to provide quality, affordability and speed of assembly. These modules are woven together by walls of glass on either side of the central living space, with a loft bedroom above each module. Precut wood interiors and furniture pieces enable rapid construction at a huge cost savings. The furniture is an integral part of the architecture by optimizing space and flexibility, allowing for living space reconfiguration depending upon function. An excellent example of compact sustainable living, the house also features rainwater harvesting, geothermal heating and cooling, air-to-air feat recovery and ventilation, and passive solar with insulated shutter doors to minimize heat loss at night or when unoccupied.”

Harpoon House was designed to encourage a fluid relationship between indoor and outdoor living. Yes, it does rain a lot in Oregon. But for the record, Portland’s average yearly rainfall is less than Seattle, New York or Houston.

No conventional roofs were used in the making of this house. Harpoon House is topped with of 433 square feet of ecoroof. Soil and plants instead of tar paper and asphalt shingles. The verdant rooftop will help the house stay cool in the summer months and absorb run-off in the rainy months. Why aren’t more roofs green?

ONE+ is a modular small house concept from Scandinavia, based on a co-oporation between Denmark and Sweden, choosing high quality materials from both countries. Based on 15 sq meters (161 sq ft) modules, the ONE+ house is designed for those needing extra room on their lot.

via Add A Room

The system can be linked together with other modules in different ways to create a variety of designs and meeting different needs, kind of lego building blocks for adults. The system includes deck and pergola as well as posibilities to connect other outdoor facilities such as outdoor kitchen, all to make the houses feeling bigger and erasing the lines between out- and-indoor. Quiet simply, we call it compact smart living!

via Add A Room

Danish architect, Lars Frank Nielsen: Our goal was to design a simple, almost minimalistic house, a house that can stand alone, but also a house that can be pieced together unit by unit. During the design process, there has been an evolution towards a true “multi-unit-concept”: you can start with a single unit and enlarge it step by step into a genuine holiday home.”

The two-bedroom rectangular house is located on a rural road about a mile from the Mount Hood Winery and Nutquacker Farms, surrounded by firs, big leaf maples and reseeded wildflowers. It sits 10 feet off the ground on a noticeably large and solid concrete box, which contains two storage units. The elevation is a concession to flood-plain code, which prohibits “habitable” floors less than four feet off the ground. “But also, on this really beautiful site, we wanted to design something that didn’t overwhelm it — something that was small, floating,” Ms. Donohue said.

A key concept for the house was “to literally have no footprint,” Ms. Donohue said. The roof is engineered to sustain plants and soil to absorb rainwater. Planters with native grasses, which are embedded in the cedar deck and walkway, also help absorb rainwater while screen-covered inserts in the concrete storage units allow floodwater to flow in and out. “There’s the idea that nature is running through the building,” Mr. McKean said. Other features include tigerwood flooring certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a vegetable wax finish, a water-conserving toilet, an on-demand water heater and in the bathroom a solar tube — a type of skylight that intensifies natural light — to use in place of a regular electrical fixture.

HABODE is built on an eco-friendly concept designed by New Zealander Rod Gibson who recalls the enjoyment of holidays in a secluded spot near clear waters and green grass that epitomizes the development of family values he took for granted as a child in the early 1960′s. With HABODE, Rod seeks to share that enjoyment of life with his family and with you.

The challenge that HABODE has grasped with passion is to provide high quality, potentially self-sufficient, and affordable accommodation alternatives to a range of market environments in Australasia, North America, Asia, and the Pacific Rim region. This strategy seeks to generate a significant impact on the way we think about a home, especially in the niche area of re-locatable, recreational homes. This concept also provides for quality accommodation for industry, urban accommodation for the service sectors and rural accommodation, and many other applications for an economical and timely package both permanent and temporary housing.

Glencomeragh House Retreat Center is located in a valley between the Comeragh Mountains and Slievenamon. The campus is bounded by a river to the south, and mature woodland to the west. The Poustinia are located on the Northern incline of the campus and are positioned close to existing plantings of mature broad-leaf trees, which form their entrance and terrace spaces. Each Poustinia is orientated to capture different views over the surrounding countryside and to give a variance in sun light as the day progresses. They are set into and over the hillside, which has been planted as a wild flower meadow with a variety in the mix that will create seasonal blooming. A circular path connects the Poustinia to the Main House and a network of paths and ponds that also lead to riverside and woodland walks.

The building’s form creates its own trapped space of the site’s limestone. With the window shutters closed an inner space is created to encourage contemplation and meditation. A day bed opposite the window overlooking the wider landscape, allows rest to be enhanced by the enjoyment of the view. The locally sourced timber cladding in alternating strips of smooth sawn larch and rough sawn douglas fir contrasts with the minimalist interior with its bespoke furniture and suggests the conjunction of the temporal and the transcendent to which the retreat tradition is devoted.
